Fame

Ask most people what an art director working in movies does, and they'll probably answer, "A what kind of director?"

But this doesn't mean fame is out of your reach. If people in Hollywood know and respect your work, then you won't care what the rest of the American population thinks.

Take William Cameron Menzies. Sure, he's been dead a long time, but people in the film industry still worship him.

Menzies did a lot of design work back during the silent-movie era. He was so good at his job, in fact, that David O. Selznick brought Menzies on to do the set design and Technicolor (amongst other things) for Gone With the Wind. That whole Atlanta-burning scene? All Menzies.

In the end, Selznick had so much faith in Menzies' abilities that he coined the term "production designer" for the man, because the simple title of "art director" wouldn't cut it. If you're good enough at your job, someday you might have a new term coined for you. We like the sound of "Infallible One."
