Your failure or success in the field depends almost solely on your results. If you lose clients' money, or aren't making them as much as you should, then you may be asked to leave town and never return. But if one of them is building a new wing and naming it after you, you can probably expect to be around for a while.
In practice, the more potential reward in a given career tract, the higher the attrition rate, so before you decide to go for the gold, be sure you have the stomach to eat some crow every now and then.
