Odds of Hanging On

College is going to continue to be seen as the way for students to get their foot in the door to a decent career for years to come, which means your job isn't going anywhere.

Keep in mind, however, that the face of higher education is likely to change over the next few decades, as colleges become more expensive and people find more innovative ways (via the Interwebz) of obtaining that undergraduate degree in astrophysics. You'll need to stay hip, cool, and with it so you can provide the best advice possible to the kids who come to you for help.

Furthermore, many public schools today are facing financial difficulties: There just isn't enough money to pay for teachers, building maintenance, the high school football team, and you. There may come a day when you find yourself cut out of your district's budget, and jobless.

However, you can always find work in a similar field. College counselors have gone on to work in college admissions, as professors in counseling programs, and as entrepreneurs with consulting firms that cater to ambitious parents and their spawn. Er, children.
