Common Core Standards

Grade 8

Language L.8.2

Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

This is it. The final Common Core Standard related to comma use. (Comma haters rejoice!) Commas aren't the only punctuation marks receiving some love (or hate) in eighth grade—ellipses and dashes are joining the party, too. We at Shmoop think that ellipses and dashes are some of the coolest forms of punctuation out there—just look at how many times we use them! Don't forget to remind students that commas are more than something you plop down when you want the reader to take a breath....

P.S. If your students need to brush up on their spelling and grammar, send 'em over to our Grammar Learning Guides so they can hone their skills before conquering the Common Core.
