Common Core Standards

Grade 5

Given that we ain't too good at grammerin' ourselves, we would never hold it against a student for tripping up while traipsing through that overgrown forest we know as the "English language." Thankfully, your fifth graders have the perfect guide to shepherd them through this wilderness: you.

These standards deal with the nuts and bolts of writing, which can sometimes be harder to grasp than a greasy wrench. Your students might be tempted to rely on Spell Check and AutoCorrect to take care of the minutiae of their writing, but you'll need to show them why it's important to understand the English language on a relatively granular level.

By integrating these standards into your lesson plans, you'll ensure that your students have a solid baseline of language skills before diving into the murkier waters of middle and high school. Whether you achieve this through good old fashioned sentence diagrams or inventive modern techniques, now's the time to graduate your students from linguistic Padawans to linguistic Masters.
