Source: Star Trek

Speaker: Captain Kirk

Beam me up, Scotty.

Context

People mistakenly think this line is spoken by Captain Kirk, played by William Shatner, in the TV show Star Trek (1966-1969).

The Starship Enterprise goes where no man has gone before—and sometimes where those men (and women) wish they'd never gone at all. When it's time to hightail it off Gamma Hydra II, Captain Kirk calls out, "Beam me up, Scotty!"

…Or not. Neither Captain Kirk nor anyone else on the Enterprise said these exact words. Sometimes they came close. In the 1968 episode "The Gamesters of Triskelion," Kirk says "Beam us up!" Us instead of me. Kirk's a little less selfish than we thought he was.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this if someone wants to get off an alien planet and return home. Or just get out of Walmart and go back to the car.

Nicki Minaj also released a mixtape and song called "Beam me up, Scotty" in 2009.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

William Shatner used the line, verbatim, in a novel he wrote in 1996, The Ashes of Eden. There aren't. Many actors. More. Preten. Tious. Than Shatner. So don't quote. Him.

Whew. Glad we got that settled.
