Speaker: Electric Light Orchestra

Don't bring me down…Bruce!

Context

This misquoted line is from the song "Don't Bring Me Down" by Electric Light Orchestra from the album Discovery (1979).

Who the heck is Bruce, and why is Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra pinning all his hopes on him? Is he in danger, and singing to Batman, but accidentally giving away his secret identity as Bruce Wayne? Is he trapped in a cabin full of demons and pleading for help from Bruce Campbell?

The answer is none of the above. Lynne is actually singing a nonsense word "grus." But allegedly the misheard lyric was so popular, Lynne changed it to "Bruce" at live shows.

Where you've heard it

You heard this when your friends hope the Evil Dead TV show starring Bruce Campbell won't be a letdown.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This quote isn't pretentious. Don't let us down and make it sound snooty.
