"Dy-no-mite!"

"Dy-no-mite!"

Context

This line is spoken by J.J., played by Jimmie Walker, in the TV show Good Times (1974-1979).

The 1970s seem like they were easy time. You didn't have to comb your hair to look fashionable. You could wear huge comfortable pants and whatever jewelry you wanted. And to get big laughs, all you needed to do was shout "Dyn-o-mite!"

At least it worked for Jimmie Walker, who transformed this one word into a catchphrase on the hit sitcom Good Times.

Where you've heard it

You've heard it if you've ever seen Jimmie Walker anywhere or if someone who grew up in the 1970s needs a quick, cheap laugh.

However, it's endured. Do a google image search for "dynomite," and instead of finding how to blow stuff up, you'll find pictures of JJ and his iconic catchphrase.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

It's not fresh—that's for sure—but it's not pretentious either.
