"If thou shalt confess with thy mouth."

If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:9-10, KJV)

Context

This quote is written by Paul in an epistle in Romans 10:9.

In this section of Paul's letter to the Christians in Rome, he's talking about the difference between Judaism (of which he's a proud member) and Christianity (a tribe he also calls his own). Paul explains that Jews tend to believe salvation comes from Jewish law. Follow the Torah and you'll get in good with the Big Guy. Simple, right?

But what if Paul told you there was an even easier way? God sent Jesus to bypass all those stuffy laws that he passed down thousands of years ago.

Now, the most important way to become a favorite with the Almighty is to believe in Jesus. Paul suggests that you openly profess your faith and then internalize that into your heart. If you talk like a believer and think like a believer, salvation is a snap.

Where you've heard it

This is actually a pretty short and simple sound-bite for salvation. Break glass, and use as desired.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This verse might come off as a little bossy and all-knowing, but we imagine that most folks who say it mean well. However, use with caution. Not everyone likes being told how to be saved.
