"It rained fire and brimstone from heaven."

But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

Context

This is a line spoken by Jesus and written by Luke in Luke 17:29.

Jesus is describing how things are going to go down when he comes for a second time. It'll be a bit like Noah's flood, a bit like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, y'know. Just a bit more fire and brimstone and all those bad guys will be goners.

Where you've heard it

When someone is gloomily talking about the end of the world. Or just a really bad thunderstorm.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Not pretentious, especially if you're a volcanologist.
