Author: Matthew

"It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring."

He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring.

Context

This line is spoken by Jesus in Matthew 16:2-3.

The Pharisees come to Jesus and say, "Look, man. You're making some pretty outlandish claims about being the Son of God and stuff. Can you show us a sign?" And Jesus basically says, "You can see the signs of the weather but you can't see all the signs already out there that I'm the Messiah? C'mon!"

Where you've heard it

"Red sky in the mornin', sailor take warnin'." If you hang around many salty old sea dogs, you'll hear this all the time.

But does this old saying actually have any truth to it? Totally. Turns out that a red sky at sunrise is a sign that bad weather might be in the forecast. Which means it's a bad day to be a sailor.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Not super pretentious, but also not terribly useful if you're a landlubber.
