"Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's."

And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

Context

This line is written by Luke in Luke 20:25.

As always, the chief priests and scribes of the Jews are trying to get Jesus to say something that will make him look dumb or get him thrown in jail or whatever. This time they're asking him if it's cool to pay taxes to the Romans, the Jews' pagan oppressors. But also as always, Jesus has a ready response that turns the tables on those dorks.

Where you've heard it

You might hear this quote when people are talking about the give-and-take between religion and politics. The basic idea is that some stuff belongs in the political sphere, and some stuff belongs in the religious/spiritual sphere.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This one might be a tad much for certain crowds. Like people named Caesar.
