"Writing on the wall"

In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

Context

This line is written by the writer of Daniel in Daniel 5:5.

One day while King Belshazzar is partying and blaspheming, suddenly a hand appears and writes something on the wall. The King freaks out. He calls out for fortune tellers and wise men to come check out the message, but nobody seems to be able to decipher it.

Nobody, that is, except Daniel.

Where you've heard it

You'll hear this when the facts are right there in front of your face. "The writing's on the wall, Daryl. I'm the only baritone in town that can handle your jam." And darn it, he's right.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Feel free to use this one, especially if there's some situation where there really is writing on the wall, like when you've caught a notorious bathroom graffiti artist.
