What's done is done Why Should I Care

Why Should I Care?

Lady Macbeth gets a bad rap because she's a brazen, warrior-like woman. She often gets blamed for the whole Macbeth-kills-Duncan-and-takes-the-crown thing. And there's good reason for that.

She does help convince him to go through with the murder. And she does help with carry out the deed by planting evidence on some unwitting guards. She even tries to calm him down later (in this scene) by letting him know that their actions can't be changed.

But she also has a softer side that is often forgotten. She might want to be a skillful, courageous, cutthroat alpha, but she ends up losing it over what she and her husband did. She can't handle the fact that they murdered, got away with it, and then had no problem continuing on that little trend.

Now, we know what you're thinking. What does any of that have to do with me? I've never murdered anyone or stolen a kingdom and lied about it. But we're betting that you've done some things that were immoral or hurt other people. Like what, you ask?

  • Cheating on a test
  • Dating your best friend's girl
  • Convincing your little brother or sister to do something stupid
  • Lying to your parents about your homework
  • Sneaking into an R-rated movie you weren't supposed to see

Yeah, we thought so. There are loads of things in life you just can't undo. Whether you feel bad about them or not, you can't take it back.

So use Lady Macbeth as your guide. You might not end up roaming around a castle trying to wash blood off your hands in the middle of the night, but chances are, you'll feel guilty about hurting someone or not doing the right thing. Because the truth is, sometimes, what's done is done.
