Wisdom's House of Seven Pillars

Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory

This is briefly referenced in Proverbs 9:1: "Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars." (The Seven Pillars of Wisdom later became the title for a memoir by T.E. Lawrence, or "Lawrence of Arabia.")

There are various interpretations of what this means. Christian commentators who identified Christ with Wisdom viewed this as a parable for Christ's creation of the church. The Protestant commentators John Wesley and Matthew Henry saw "seven pillars" as simply meaning "many pillars," and interpreted it as referring to the various prophets and apostles who held up the church.
