Alejandra

From the moment she rides by, Alejandra is the person who structures John's desire and action in the novel. She is out of reach at first, being well above John's station in life by virtue of her wealth and breeding, but the initial impossible temptation eventually becomes real. And then it shatters what remains of John's life once the strictures of Mexican society and Alfonsa push them apart.
