• Ismene and Antigone return to Thebes in order to try to prevent their brothers from killing each other. They are too late, however, and learn that their brothers are dead.
• Antigone asks Ismene to help her illegally bury their brother Polyneices.
• Ismene says she cannot act against the law and that she fears the consequences.
• After Antigone acts alone and is caught, Ismene attempts to accept part of the blame. However, Antigone refuses to let her.
