SPC William (Billy) Lynn Timeline & Summary

  • Billy's sister Kathryn gets into a horrific car accident and is harshly dumped by her boyfriend in the immediate aftermath.
  • Billy attacks Kathryn's ex-boyfriend to avenge her honor, and as a result is given the choice between jail time or voluntary enlistment in the Army. Army it is.
  • In Iraq, Billy heroically tries to save his friend Shroom and kills a bunch of people in battle. It's all caught on film, and bam, he and Bravo are famous.
  • Bravo is shipped home to American for a two week "victory tour."
  • Albert, a famous Hollywood producer who wants to make a film about the Bravos' famous battle, contacts them in order to get things rolling.
  • Billy and Bravo meet various celebrities and appear at a bunch of events where tons of well-wishers want to thank them for their service and support the troops and blah blah blah.
  • A few days before Thanksgiving, Billy gets to go home to Stovall, Texas to see his family. Things are awkward at home, especially because his dad is terrible and his sister feels guilty that he has to go back to Iraq. But Billy realizes that the war has made him appreciate the simple things in life.
  • Kathryn arranges for an organization to contact Billy about helping him go AWOL in order to avoid going back to war.
  • On Thanksgiving Day, Billy and Bravo are driven to Texas Stadium to watch the big football game.
  • Billy drinks five Jack and Cokes to try and defeat his hangover. (Hint: that doesn't work.)
  • Bravo has to do various meet-and-greets with fans and the press. Billy hates this part.
  • BUT. Billy meets Faison, one of the Cowboys Cheerleaders, and it's love at first sight.
  • Billy and Faison have a romantic rendezvous (for lack of a better term) but then are separated by duty.
  • The Bravos are introduced to Norm Oglesby, the owner of the Cowboys, and he's so impressed with them that he wants to produce their movie.
  • The Bravos take part in the halftime show, which features Destiny's Child. The guys' reactions vary from a full-on PTSD breakdown, to drunken stupor, to Billy's ruminations about whether the orgy-like chaos could be a new form of religion.
  • After the show ends, no one meets the Bravos to tell them where to go.
  • Billy starts an impromptu football scrimmage with the rest of Bravo, which the crowd loves but the roadies hate.
  • Albert, Norm, Billy, and Dime get into a big fight about the movie and about how much money Bravo will get.
  • The game is over, so the Bravos decide to they can get out of there.
  • On the way out to their limo, the Bravos get attacked by the roadies they offended at halftime, and the cops are called.
  • Despite the ensuing chaos, Faison and Billy meet one last time and say their goodbyes.
  • Billy decides not to call the guys that Kathryn wants him to meet, and he goes off in the limo with the rest of Bravo.
