The Black Heralds

Religious Themes

Even though Vallejo had a lot of criticism of religion in his poetry, that didn't stop him from taking a dip into the communion wine when he needed a metaphor or two. Images like the "fallen Christs," the bread, and the "black heralds" themselves are all biblical in nature, and this type of reference would continue throughout Vallejo's career. The book of poems published in 1937, España, aparta de mí este cáliz (Spain, Take This Chalice) is a direct reference to Jesus' prayer when he himself was suffering.
