Character Role Analysis

Pa, Mr.__, and Men in General

Male characters continually prevent Celie from having a good life. First, Pa rapes her and takes her children away, then Mr.__ treats her like a maid or an animal. And Pa and Mr.__ are not the only terrible men in the story. Shug Avery even sings a song called "A Good Man is Hard to Find" at one point. Overall, however, this isn’t an anti-male novel. Pa remains a complete jerk throughout the entire book, but Mr.__ proves that men can grow and change. In then end, Mr.__ realizes how terribly he treated Celie and apologizes. Also, Samuel was always a pretty good guy.
