Character Role Analysis

Lourdes/Pilar

Lourdes and Pilar lock horns so often and fantastically that we're almost embarrassed to include them here. These two go together like fish eyes and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. The antagonism between them arises from their different social and cultural experiences—and yes, a generation gap. Lourdes' experience of Cuba fuels her hatred of the State and the Revolution; Pilar's innocence and constantly fluxing identity leaves her space to consider the romantic possibilities of the island. The two aren't going to see eye to eye, even after Pilar understands that her concept of Cuba was a little too rosy.
