Go Set a Watchman Chapter 19 Summary

  • In this short final chapter, Jean Louise goes to pick Atticus up at the office.
  • He says he's proud of her for "hold[ing] her ground for what she thinks is right" (19.18). He's not saying he agrees with her, obvs.
  • She says that it's important to have both sides and not to stamp out people like him. "They're the drag and we're the thrust, together we make the thing fly" (19.23).
  • Jean Louise tells Atticus that she loves him, and she climbs into the car.
  • This time, she doesn't bump her head.
  • No symbolism there or anything.
