Golgomath

Character Analysis

Golgomath is the new leader of the giants after he defeats Karkus in battle. Physical strength means power in the giant world, clearly – and elections appear to be a lot tougher than in the human world. Hagrid tries to negotiate with Golgomath, but he refuses to listen to a word Hagrid and Madame Maxine have to say. The thing is, Golgomath has already received messages from two Death Eaters, and he won't receive anything from Professor Dumbledore.

Hagrid and Madame Maxine find a cave of giants who have been horribly injured by Golgomath's henchmen. They tend the wounds of these giants and talk to them about Professor Dumbledore. But Golgomath raids the caves, and "the ones tha' survived didn' wan' no more ter do with us after that" (20.167). So Hagrid and Madame Maxine must leave giant territory without any success bringing the giants over to Professor Dumbledore's cause. Still, Hagrid is philosophical: he thinks that, "we gave 'em Dumbledore's message an' some o' them heard it an' I 'spect some o' them'll remember it" (20.169).
