Henry's Supporters: Clifford, Buckingham, Somerset

Character Analysis

For most of the play, Duke Buckingham and Duke Somerset are either accusing Gloucester of wrecking the kingdom or making a power play for themselves.

(Things don't go so well for Somerset: when he does get the regent position in France he's been after, he ends up losing the land.)

Lord Clifford joins in later by helping Clifford and Buckingham out in the fight against the rebels and York. Clifford and Buckingham convince the rebels to step down with a few convincing speeches about the importance of kings. It looks like a huge victory, but the rebels have shown how easily they're persuaded by a rousing speech. Pretty much anyone could come along and convince them to do anything, as long as it sounds good. Who's going to persuade the rebels next?

All three of these dudes fight against York when he tries to take the crown. These men are tough as nails, and they fight to the death.

For the most part, they just add to the background noise going on around Henry. They put out his fires for him so he doesn't have to, but they can only hold his enemies for so long...
