The House on Mango Street is a coming-of-age story. So, it sort of goes without saying that it's got sex in it. After all, part of growing up is figuring out what sex is all about, and our protagonist Esperanza displays a healthy curiosity about all the weird feelings that make her notice boys and like it when boys notice her. However, Esperanza's attitude towards sex is influenced by the men who push her into it before she's ready. When an old man at work forces her to kiss him, it's merely a disturbing prelude to a much more violent event that happens later, when a group of boys rapes her.
