Lilia Timeline and Summary

  • In the fall of 1971, when Lilia is ten, a man called Mr. Pirzada starts coming to her house for dinner and TV.
  • She learns that he's Bangladeshi, not Indian, because of the 1947 Partition of India and that his wife and seven daughters are caught in the middle of the Bangladesh/East Pakistan civil war.
  • Because Mr. Pirzada is so nice to her and gives her candy each night he visits (which she saves in a special box), Lilia starts to learn—on her own—about the histories of Bangladesh and India.
  • On Halloween, Mr. Pirzada helps carve pumpkins and offers to make sure that Lilia and her friend are safe while trick-or-treating although her mom says it's not necessary.
  • Mr. Pirzada eventually returns to Dacca and reunites happily with his family.
  • Lilia, torn up by his absence, throws away all her Halloween candy, which we learn she'd been eating piece by piece every night for the sake of his family.
