Narrator of "The Third and Final Continent" Timeline and Summary

  • As a young man, the narrator leaves India and goes to London in order to get an education.
  • In 1969, at the age of 36, he enters into an arranged marriage while preparing to move to America, where he's taken a job at MIT's library.
  • He spends one week with his new wife in India and then flies off to Cambridge, where he decides to rent a room in a large house owned by an elderly lady named Mrs. Croft.
  • Although Mrs. Croft is a little eccentric, the narrator sits with her in the evenings after work and they talk about the moon landing.
  • Mrs. Croft's daughter visits and the narrator discovers Mrs. Croft is 103 but very independent, which makes him nervous and reminds him of his mother who died of insanity.
  • On Fridays he always hands the rent directly into her hands because her hands can't grasp things well.
  • One day, while out walking, he sees a dog snap at an Indian woman, which makes him think about his responsibilities to Mala, his wife who's still in India waiting for her immigration documents to be ready.
  • In preparation for Mala, he moves out of Mrs. Croft's house and into an apartment.
  • When Mala arrives, things are awkward until the narrator takes Mala to visit Mrs. Croft.
  • Mrs. Croft calls her a lady, which leads to the first shared, intimate moment between Mala and the narrator.
  • From that point on, the narrator gives us a summary of their life together: they move to a house in the suburbs of Boston; raise a son who eventually attends Harvard; and live happily together.
