Character Role Analysis

Dmitri Dmitritch Gurov

Although we have some access to Anna's thoughts (see "Narrator Point of View" for more), we get the majority of the story from Gurov's perspective. "Lady with the Dog" begins with Gurov; when he and Anna part ways, we follow his character and not hers. Even the title of the story reflects Anna as seen by Gurov. Remember that this story falls under the realism genre, so Gurov isn't expected to fulfill some classic hero archetype – and he doesn't. When she story begins we might even be inclined to dislike this chauvinist womanizer. The narrative itself neither condemns nor condones his behavior, but simply observes and presents this brief story for its readers.
