  • M.C.'s in the woods checking his rabbit traps when he notices the girl-stranger for the first time.
  • They tussle, and she hits M.C. on the head.
  • Later that day, he also runs into another stranger, James K. Lewis, the music collector, whom he brings back to his house.
  • James warns M.C. about the spoil-heap's danger to M.C.'s house.
  • M.C. lets Jones know what James told him, but Jones doesn't take it seriously.
  • Banina comes home and sings for James, who records her.
  • The next day, M.C. and his mother head out for an early swim at the lake; M.C. notices the girl, who's camping next to the lake.
  • They start talking and his siblings join him.
  • M.C. takes the girl into the water tunnel under the lake; they barely make it out alive, and they spend the rest of the morning recovering from the dive.

  • He goes to sleep and then wakes up late in the night, worried that something has happened to Lurhetta because of the storm that's going on outside.
  • He rushes to her campsite and finds that she's gone, except for her knife.
  • Morning comes and he uses the knife to guide him to the dirt mound around his bicycle pole.
  • He starts digging and taking the dirt to build a wall; his siblings join in and so does Ben.
  • His father notices Ben and is about to run him off, but M.C. stands up to his father and defends Ben.
  • The kids continue building the wall.
