The Man from Maw and Meggins

Character Analysis

This is perhaps the most mysterious character in the story. He wears fancy clothes and works for the company that employed Herbert White. He is probably a lawyer of some sort, settling the Maw and Meggins company affairs.

This guy has the unpleasant task of delivering the bad news of Herbert's death and the good/bad news of the two hundred pounds to the Whites. He obviously doesn't think the company is doing right by the Whites. In that way, he represents all those people who feel forced to do things for their bosses that conflict with their personal beliefs. He also represents the way some companies see their employees as mere workers, not flesh and blood human beings.
