Leah Price Timeline & Summary

  • Leah spends the first few days (Weeks? Months? There are no clocks in the Congo, so it's hard to tell) of her time in Kilanga following her father around and trying to be his favorite daughter. He hardly notices her.
  • Things change for Leah when she flies to Leopoldville with her father to see the first democratically elected president of Congo, Patrice Lumumba, give his acceptance speech.
  • She doesn't realize it yet, but Leah's finally found something she believes in. Peace out, God. Hello, justice for all.
  • Leah finds herself growing closer to Anatole because he, too, believes in independence.
  • Anatole teaches Leah to use a bow and arrow, and she participates in the village hunt, royally ticking off some male members of Kilanga.
  • When Tata Kuvudundu puts a green mamba snake in the chicken shed, it bites Ruth May, and she dies in Leah's arms.
  • Orleanna decides it's time to blow this joint and ditch her husband. With all her living daughters in tow, they flee the jungle.
  • Leah gets malaria. While Rachel leaves with Eeben Axelroot and Adah leaves with Orleanna, Leah stays behind with Anatole.
  • They eventually marry and have four children.
  • For the decades that follow, Leah finds herself a mother, a farmer, a teacher, fighting for the people and wondering if the world will ever be fair.
