Character Analysis
The man with the withered arm is another one of three old and creepy-looking custodians left to take care of the abandoned Lorraine Castle. He tries, and fails, to dissuade the narrator from going to the red room. The morning after the narrator’s nasty night, the man with the withered arm cares for him with the old woman, and appears to have warmed to him somewhat after his bad experience. We don’t know much about the man with the withered arm, except that he’s afraid of the room and refuses to show the narrator there at night (although he does give him directions).
