Latika (Freida Pinto (younger Latika played by Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar and Rubina Ali))’s Timeline and Summary
- Latika meets Jamal and Salim as a young girl after the riots. She's presumably orphaned much like the brothers.
- Along with Jamal and Salim, Latika is captured by Maman, who forces the children to beg.
- While Jamal and Salim are able to escape Maman, Latika is recaptured by the gangster.
- In the time that passes, Latika becomes Maman's "prized possession," as she's groomed for eventual sale into prostitution.
- Jamal and Salim arrive to rescue her, and this time all three of the musketeers successfully escape.
- Salim asserts his dominance and after threatening Jamal, takes Latika into a room at the abandoned hotel alone. We can only guess as to what happens next.
- We learn that Salim passes Latika along as a trophy to his new boss, Javed Khan. She doesn't appear to have much freedom in this arrangement, but aside from the slumlord's abusive outbursts, she seems to be relatively safe.
- Jamal manages to find Latika in Javed's compound to convince her to escape with him. Despite Jamal's insistence, Latika tells him that it is too late, and that she can't go with him.
- But Latika takes up Jamal's offer, and attempts to find him at the train station, as Jamal suggested. However, Salim arrives at the last minute, capturing her. She receives a pretty nasty cut on her cheek for retribution.
- Back in the clutches of Javed, Latika watches news coverage of Jamal's unexpected success on Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
- Surprisingly, Salim offers her his car keys and cell phone, telling her to go. With Salim promising to deal with Javed, Latika's free to find Jamal.
- Latika runs into massive traffic as Jamal returns to the game show. She decides to abandon her car and watch with hundreds of slum dwellers Jamal's appearance on a TV in a shop window.
- She watches as Jamal, on his last question, uses his phone-a-friend lifeline, attempting to call his brother, Salim. Realizing however that she has Salim's phone, and that she left that phone in her car, she races back and is able to pick up just in time.
- Though she doesn't know the answer to the question, she tells Jamal that she's safe, which is all he needs to hear.
- Later on, Latika waits for Jamal at the train station. Sure enough he arrives, and the two share a well-deserved moment of peace together.
- Then, they dance.
