Song of Solomon (Song of Songs) Chapter 7 Summary

The Lovefest Continues

  • In case you weren't 100% sure of their feelings, the bride and the groom have more words of praise for each other. Love, it seems, is an endless fountain of inspiration for these lovebirds to keep gushing about how awesome they are together. Hey, can you blame them?
  • In verses 1-9, the groom goes into TMI details about nearly every part of the bride's body.
  • Natural imagery abounds as her beauty is linked to the landscape. Things get a little frisky, though, when he describes the bride as "stately as a palm tree" and says he will "climb the palm tree and lay hold of its branches" (7:7). That's a sex metaphor and a fertility metaphor all rolled into one. Nicely done, poet. If not a little misogynistic.
  • We even get another dose of intoxicating love: the groom says, "your kisses [are] like the best wine that goes down smoothly, gliding over lips and teeth" (7:9). Nice line.
  • The bride responds with a request to frolic in the country among the vineyards, where she will "give you my love" (7:12). In Hebrew, the exact word is dodim, and it means lovemaking. Yep, they're going to make whoopee. And yep, that's sex in the Bible.
