Elisa Allen Timeline and Summary

  • Elisa tends to her chrysanthemums in her garden, while her husband Henry handles some ranch business with two men down by the tractor shed.
  • Her husband startles her when he returns from his meeting. They discuss her gardening gift, and he tells her he wants to go into to town for the evening, to celebrate his business deal.
  • Agreeing, Elisa gets back to gardening while Henry finishes work on the ranch.
  • A man approaches in a wagon and strikes up a conversation with Elisa, who promptly rejects his requests for work.
  • When he compliments her chrysanthemums, Elisa responds positively, and gives him some shoots to take to another customer.
  • Eagerly, she explains how to care for the shoots, but struggles to explain how to trim the buds. Apparently, caring for them is somehow related to how she feels at night, when she feels like she's rising up into the stars. Whatever you say, Elisa.
  • Then, she almost touches the man, but retracts her hand at the last second.
  • She tells the man she totally envies his lifestyle, and that even though she's a woman, she might surprise him with her abilities.
  • But he takes off not long after, and Elisa returns to the house to get ready for the evening.
  • Elisa and Henry take off in their car. On the road, she sees her chrysanthemums, which the man has tossed in the road. Upset, she looks away, and strikes up a conversation with Henry about their plans for the evening.
  • She tells him it will be enough for her if they can just have wine with dinner.
  • Then, sadly, she turns away from her husband and cries quietly.
