Character Role Analysis

Selia

Sometimes it's hard to sort out who's good and who's evil, but not in this book—we know Selia's the antagonist early on because she's the one who keeps trying to stop Ani's every move.

First she tries to manipulate Ani into having tea or talking to her mom; then she tries on Ani's dresses without asking. And of course, killing people off to become a princess is a big no-no. But what really irks us about this social climber is that she lies, cheats, and steals her way to the top—and even once she's there, her nastiness continues as she claims there's a war brewing so she can keep wearing fancy clothes and enjoying a warm bath. We love warm baths, but we definitely don't like Selia.
