Natasha Kingsley Timeline & Summary

  • Natasha goes to the USCIS office in a last-ditch effort to stop her family's deportation.
  • She passes through Irene's security line and meets with Lester Barnes.
  • Lester tells her everything will be irie in Jamaica, which is not what she wanted to hear.
  • She tearfully tells him off and gets up to leave, but he's compelled to give her an immigration attorney's card.
  • She calls the attorney to set up a meeting and has a few hours to kill, so she heads to the record shop.
  • She sees her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend making out/stealing and comments on how gross they are.
  • A cute boy in a red tie calls out her ex for stealing, and Natasha banters with him before telling him to have a nice life.
  • Natasha continues on her way to the lawyer's office, but is too lost in her own world to realize she's about to get hit by a car.
  • Red Tie (a.k.a. Daniel) saves Natasha at the last second and asks if she wants to get coffee.
  • Natasha is resistant to all his talk of fate because she has more important things on her mind, but she agrees to answer the "questions that lead to love" as part of his science experiment.
  • They get to know each other as they walk to Natasha's attorney's office, but then Natasha says it's time to part ways.
  • Natasha learns that her attorney was in a minor car accident and won't be in until later, but his paralegal walks her through the requisite paperwork and tells Natasha she's confident the attorney can win her case.
  • Natasha's elated and wishes Daniel were still around to share her good news—thankfully, he's in the lobby.
  • He's also very excited, and they continue their questionnaire as they travel to Daniel's family's Black Hair Care store.
  • Natasha meets Daniel's gross brother, Charlie, and his trying-really-hard-not-to-be-racist dad.
  • Daniel apologizes profusely and takes Natasha to his favorite Korean restaurant, where they continue their questionnaire.
  • They check out a norebang Korean karaoke bar, where Daniel crushes his song choice and Natasha completely bombs hers.
  • Natasha and Daniel have an epic makeout sesh in the norebang, and Natasha freaks out after Daniel tells her he's more convinced than ever they're meant to be. She finally tells him she's supposed to be deported that evening.
  • Game changer.
  • They have a huge fight and both storm off.
  • Natasha heads to her favorite place in the city, the Hall of Meteorites at the American Museum of Natural History. She thinks about falling in love and the creation of the universe, as one does.
  • She heads to her rescheduled meeting with the attorney, who wants to know her story.
  • Natasha reminisces about her changing relationship with her dad, his struggle to chase his dreams, and how he accidentally-but-potentially-on-purpose told a cop his family was undocumented.
  • She doesn't tell the attorney that she heard her dad say he regretted even having a family in the first place.
  • Attorney Fitzgerald tells Natasha he's confident his judge friend can delay her deportation.
  • In a very odd move, she decides to call her ex-boyfriend and asks him why he cheated on her. He says he just liked both girls and didn't want to hurt either one of them.
  • All righty, then.
  • Natasha knows Daniel's heart wouldn't have been so wishy-washy, and for the second time that day, she really wants to tell him her news.
  • She heads back to his family's store and convinces Charlie to give her Daniel's number.
  • Surprise! He's looking for her too and is waiting at her attorney's office.
  • They reunite, make out on the roof, and continue their questionnaire.
  • Natasha calls Lester Barnes to thank him for meeting with her and spontaneously asks him to thank Irene too.
  • She contemplates calling her mom while Daniel is at his alumni interview.
  • Unfortunately, Daniel's alumni interview happens to be with Natasha's attorney, who was not able to delay her deportation.
  • Daniel breaks the news to Natasha and they vow to spend every possible remaining second together.
  • Natasha brings Daniel home to help her pack.
  • Her dad tries to lecture her, and she yells that she's been trying to fix his mistakes and he has to stop living in denial. He "doesn't get to regret" having a family (327).
  • After the daddy-daughter fight, all the Kingsleys are crying and they share a family hug, but Natasha hugs Daniel first.
  • Natasha and Daniel ride to the airport together, and they do the final item on their questionnaire: Staring into each other's eyes for four minutes. It is excruciatingly sad. :(
  • Natasha returns to Jamaica, where we learn that she gets a job as a waitress to help her family make ends meet. Eventually, she studies physics.
  • At some point 10 years after Natasha is deported, she's on a plane.
  • We're not sure where she's going, but it's not as important as who she's with—the flight attendant is Irene, the former USCIS security guard.
  • Irene tells Natasha that she had contemplated suicide 10 years ago, but Natasha's spontaneous phone call thanking her proved that somebody noticed her, and she got professional help.
  • Natasha is astounded and introduces herself to Irene.
  • A young man in the row behind her hears Natasha say her name, and he stands up.
  • It's Daniel!
  • Unless Nicola Yoon decides to write The Sun Is Also A Star 2: The Moon Is Also A Block of Cheese, we're going to make an executive decision that Natasha and Daniel live happily ever after.
