Bobby Phillips Timeline and Summary

  • Bobby Phillips wakes up one morning and finds that he can't see himself in the mirror… which is a little disconcerting.
  • He goes downstairs to tell his parents, and they are equally horrified. They tell him that he can't tell anyone and then head off to work, leaving him home alone.
  • Because he's bored, Bobby wraps himself up in lots of clothes so he looks like he has a visible body, and goes off to the university library. When he's there, he stashes his clothes in the bathroom and wanders around naked for a while. Sweet.
  • When he goes back outside, he bumps into a girl on the sidewalk romantic comedy style, but instead of screaming her head off when his scarf falls off to reveal his invisibility, she says nothing. It turns out that she's blind. Phew, that was a close one.
  • Bobby gets home and gets snippy with his dad for leaving him alone at home. His dad feels badly and says that he's going to go pick up Bobby's mom, and they're all going to have dinner together as a family.
  • He falls asleep in front of the television, but when he wakes up, Bobby sees that the news is showing a local car accident. To his horror, he recognizes one of the cars involved—it's his parents' car.
  • Despite the challenges, Bobby manages to go visit his parents at the hospital. His mom tells him that he'll be on his own for a few days, and to lay low.
  • Bobby goes home and spends some time loafing around. However, he ends up going back to the library, and while there, he strikes up a friendship with the blind girl, Alicia, and even ends up telling her about his invisibility situation.
  • When Bobby's parents get back from the hospital, they all work on finding a cure for his condition. Even Alicia's parents get involved and end up coming over for dinner one night.
  • Bobby starts to get worried that his parents are going to get in trouble with a social worker comes by and demands to see him—the authorities think that Bobby's disappearance is suspicious, and want to figure out where he is.
  • Soon, Bobby figures out that his electric blanket has something to do with his invisibility. He convinces Alicia to help him break into Sears, Roebuck and Company to get their legal records.
  • He and Alicia take a cab out to the company headquarters and Bobby sneaks in to steal the list of folks who have complained about the blanket, and when he returns, he starts calling all of the people on the list.
  • After exhausting most of the names, Bobby finally calls the family of a woman who tell him that she just disappeared one day. He tracks down the woman (hey there, Sheila) and learns that she's invisible, too, and now just hides out and works from home in her apartment.
  • Bobby tells Alicia about his discovery, and she tells him to try the blanket again. After all, what's the worst that could happen?
  • He does just that, and wakes up in the middle of the night to the police storming their house. It seems that Bobby's parents are definitely going to jail… until the police officer spots Bobby and demands to know who he is. It turns out that Bobby can be seen now. Yippee.
  • Bobby goes to break the news to Alicia, but she suddenly gets upset and runs into her room.
  • Bobby goes to the post office to mail his electric blanket to Sheila, even though she had him that she didn't want to become visible again. He figures she should have the option anyway.
  • When he checks his email, he finds one from Alicia in which she confesses that she got upset because she feels like Bobby won't need her anymore. She also writes him a poem.
  • Bobby totally knows that Alicia is into him, so he goes over to her house again to tell her that he loves her poem—and that he loves her, too.
