Tim O'Brien

Tim O'Brien is the guy who watches and remembers. When he's part of the action, which is rare, it usually involves him forcing responsibility upon himself (see his character analysis for more). That makes it seem as though the observer can't be completely detached from the events of the book—even if you just watch the war from home, it doesn't mean you're not responsible.
