  • Maisie's parents get divorced.
  • Maisie is passed back and forth, from one parent to the other.
  • Maisie has one governess at each of her parents' houses: Miss Overmore and Mrs. Wix.
  • Maisie's parents remarry: Ida Farange marries a man named Sir Claude, and Beale Farange marries the governess Miss Overmore, who now goes by Mrs. Beale.
  • Maisie brings her stepparents together. They share a love for her, but soon enough, they share much more than that.
  • On separate walks with Mrs. Beale and Sir Claude, Maisie discovers that both of her birth parents are betraying her stepparents.
