Character Role Analysis

Mom

As a figure of compassion, Mom is the moral center of the novel. Her wacky clothes may get on Miranda's nerves a bit, but Mom leads by example. She helps imprisoned pregnant mothers, and she gave up her own dream of being a lawyer to care for her child. Miranda's mom lives her life by the values of social justice. That basically means that all people are equal and should be treated with dignity and respect. This is something Miranda begins to emulate as she grows older, beginning especially in Chapter 41.
