  • Auggie establishes immediately that he feels normal inside, but doesn't look normal outside.
  • Auggie's parents convince him to try school.
  • When he tours the school, Auggie meets three kids who have been asked by the principal to befriend him.

  • Auggie suffers through all the kids staring at him, and is surprised when a girl named Summer sits with him at lunch the first day.

  • On the last night of camp, Auggie and Jack head into the woods for a nature pee and have an ugly run-in with some mean seventh graders from another school.
  • Auggie and Jack are saved by Amos, Miles, and Henry, who circle back to check on their classmates.
  • In the fight and subsequent flight, Auggie's hearing aids are lost.
  • Auggie is banged up, but he is also completely amazed that his classmates have protected him—he is finally accepted by all his classmates, except Julian.
  • At the end of the school year Auggie finds out that his dad threw away his beloved astronaut helmet. He's outraged, until his dad tells him he missed seeing the face he loves so much.
  • At the end of the school year, Auggie wins the Henry Ward Beecher medal for being the student "whose quiet strength has carried up the most hearts" (8.Awards.16). Shmoop and Auggie's mom get totally choked up.
