First of all, it’s spelled B-O-L-O-G-N-A. Second, if you have racked up too many negligent driver points, your license will either be suspended or revoked by the MVD. You can apply for a new license at the end of this period, and hopefully you’ve changed your ways by then. Oh, sure, it starts with a few minor traffic violations here and there, but before you know it you’ll be committing grand larceny, bank fraud, and/or treason. We just don’t want to start seeing your name in the paper. Unless it’s for inventing some useful electronic gadget, or winning a peace prize. That would be pretty cool.

Each time you have a mark on your record, it stays there until you go for long enough without any points or complete an approved driver education course. Your license will be suspended for 7 days if you accumulate 12 points, and it will be suspended an additional 7 days for each point beyond 12. If you can put up 30 points in 42 minutes, you’ll probably make tonight’s highlight reel on ESPN.

• Failure to display license plate

2-pointers

• Causing accident with an emergency vehicle

• Ignoring the commands of a police officer

• Driving with an open container of alcohol in the vehicle

3-pointers

• Failure to stop at a railroad crossing

• Exceeding the speed limit by 16-20mph in a speed zone less than 70mph

• Any shot made from beyond the arc

4-pointers

• Driving without a license

6-pointers

• Passing a flashing school bus

• Flashing a passing school bus

8-pointers

• Reckless driving

14-pointers

• Fleeing the scene of an accident involving property damage

15-pointers

• Exceeding the speed limit by 36mph in a speed zone more than 70mph

24-pointers

• Fleeing from a police vehicle

You point total can be reduced in a number of ways, though. One point will be removed for every three months during which you do not accumulate more points, and three points will be removed if the driver completes an approved defensive driving course. You can also go to traffic school if you want to be preemptive about those points you’re about to accumulate (see below).
