Organizational Commitment
Categories: Company Management
How much a person has mentally pledged him/herself to the organization.
Of course, organizational commitment would have to have layers, like an onion.
There are three layers of the commitment onion:
1) affective: emotional attachment, especially to the values of the organization,
2) continuance: all about the Benjamins, a.k.a. money, and
3) normative: ethics or morals, i.e. a person stays because he or she is committed to a project that is halfway through completion and does not want to mess things up for everyone else...the nice guy or gal.
People with fancy letters after their names have conducted various studies on organizational commitment and productivity. The results? It’s not a strong relationship. In addition, that already not-so-strong relationship gets weaker as an employee is with the organization longer.
So, just because someone is committed...it doesn’t mean they’re helpful.
