White collar workers are known for their white collars. You know, the classic white button-up that office workers wear.

Manual labor workers are generally known as “blue collar,” since that’s the traditional color of manual laborer clothes, though maybe not anymore. Anyhow, both terms have stuck around.

White collar work generally denotes office work and higher levels of education. And climbing the corporate ladder is a white collar thing. Tenure and longevity (surviving) is more of a blue collar thing.
