Holy Cross College
About Me
Intro
One of two things usually happens when you tell people that you went to Holy Cross. "Oh, like Rudy from the movie Rudy?" they exclaim. That, or they think you mean College of the Holy Cross, which is in Massachusetts and only very loosely affiliated. It's okay, though. I'm fine with being understated, like Kate Winslet or Donald Sutherland. Tucked away in Northwest Indiana, I humbly live up to my reputation for pricey but solid academics. I stay out of the spotlight.
You'll find neither scandal nor any interest whatsoever in filming an unscripted drama on my land (which is roughly the size of Pooh Corner). Am I dull, though? Nah. I tend to attract practical-minded people who really "bring it" in a small community, and this keeps things interesting. There's not much pretense around here. Attitudes are upfront, and vibes are relaxed. It's an easy place to find study buddies or a crew to grab a bite with between classes.
Name
Holy Cross Saints (yeah, after that spiel about how humble I am)
Hometown
Notre Dame, Indiana (known by locals as "The Bend," short for South Bend, Indiana)
Birthdate
1966
Body Type
I'm petite (150 acres and around 500 incoming students each year) but agile, stretching into my neighboring schools, University of Notre Dame and St. Mary's College. The three of us share many resources and perks, which makes for some space to mix things up around campus.
Current Living Situation
I like to keep an eye on my students, so they're required to reside on campus freshman year. My dorms are relatively nice—basic, but new. You'll notice neither heated slate bathroom floors nor rusty fixtures. On-campus student housing is far from party town. If you're of legal drinking age and enjoy sipping pinot noir whilst studying for Shakespeare, you're out of luck…unless you go to Mass and snag a sip from the chalice.
I'm a dry campus. Oh, and there's a no boys allowed/no girls allowed nightly curfew. (Don't kill the messenger. I'm simply warning you that someone might shine a flashlight in your face if you try to watch Netflix with a co-ed after dark.) If you decide you need a little space, you're free to move off campus into one of the many nearby apartment complexes after freshman year.
Relationship Status
I sometimes feel as if I'm living in the shadow of that school across the street with the legendary football team.
Is it petty and jealous not to mention its name?
University of Notre Dame and St. Mary's College are both a stone's throw away from me, but that's not to say we throw stones at each other. We all play very nicely together. I suppose I'm the unassuming sibling carrying out a modest life by comparison.
Religion
I was founded by the Brothers of Holy Cross, but that was a long time ago, so my Roman Catholic affiliation is mostly a formality. There's a lovely church on campus that offers daily Mass, but no one will tsk-tsk you if you wait until your graduation ceremony to step foot inside.
Politics
Although there's nothing official on the books, Catholic roots plus suburban Indiana equals at least a slight bend toward conservatism. On the whole, though, you'll encounter more minds that are open to different perspectives than not.
You should apply to me if...
you dig a solid, close-knit learning community and can live without the flashy distractions that come with life in a big city or a souped-up college town.
