John Carroll University
About Me
Intro
My name is John Carroll University, but you can call me Carroll for short; everyone else does. If you've ever heard of me, you've probably heard that I'm a part of an organization of Jesus fanatics called Jesuits.
Although I love Jesus and think that He's the man, I pride myself on being open to people of different religious and cultural backgrounds.
Being a follower of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit community, I'm a strong believer in being a welcoming community and producing individuals who are the type to build homes for the homeless or help the elderly cross the street.
In addition to my excessive do-gooding, I also pride myself on my hardcore academics. With over seventy majors and fifty minors to choose from, my liberal arts core curriculum exposes students to tons of classes they would never have taken if it hadn't been required.
Sampling a little of everything from my academic buffet will pretty much guarantee you come out a well-rounded individual.
While it might look like I spend all my time studying and serving, I know how to let my hair down, too. It's hard not to make friends on a campus this small, and heading over to hubs of social activity such as Einstein Bagels or the coffee shops The Den or The Cubby maximizes your risk of running into pretty much everyone you know.
Even if you're not heading to a hot spot on campus, there's a good chance that you'll have to say hi to everyone on your way to class because you probably know every single one of them. With me, it's impossible to not have a social life.
Name
Lobo the wolf. My student body is a fierce and loyal pack, especially as fans of my twenty-three varsity teams and various intramural sports teams.
Hometown
I'm located on the beautiful East Side of Cleveland. This locale comes complete with lake-effect weather from Lake Erie that blesses you with an average of two snow days a year and local shopping centers such as Beachwood Mall or Legacy Village. Without a vehicle? If the weekend shuttle is running on schedule, no problem.
Birthdate
1886
Body Type
My student body is a close clique of 3,000 students. At a mere 62 acres of suburban campus, I'm much smaller than most schools; but when it comes to school, I say that smaller is better. Your classes will be taught by professors who know your name, and you won't be able to walk five feet without running into someone you know.
Being in such close quarters means that making friends is inevitable. You and your peers will eat together, study together, laugh together, and, during finals and midterms, even cry together.
Those big state schools can eat their hearts out.
Current Living Situation
If you're a Harry Potter fan, you won't be disappointed. My dorms are full-on Hogwarts style, especially the twin dorms Pacelli and Dolan (not to be confused with the Dolan Center for Science and Technology).
I've got eight residence halls on campus, most of which are occupied by underclassmen. I've got three dorms for freshmen and three for sophomores, and they're all in the classic "college dorm" style—i.e. no elbow room, but lots of friend-making opportunities. And, of course, Wi-Fi. Sweet, sweet Wi-Fi.
By the time my students get to be upperclassmen, they've usually had enough of that. Not the Wi-Fi part, the no-elbow-room part. I'm one step ahead of them—I own a whole bunch of houses and duplexes right near campus that I'm happy to let them move into. I also have a dorm for juniors and seniors.
It's a nice dorm, don't get me wrong, but it only houses four hundred people, and by the time they're thinking about graduation, most of my students are also thinking that it's time to start cooking for themselves.
If you join a fraternity or sorority, you'll most likely be placed in Hamlin Hall, where each floor is occupied by a different group. Hamlin houses eight of my nine Greek life communities, and each floor has its own lobby area, bathrooms, and Chapter Room so that you don't have to associate with those people.
Kidding. Associating with those people is a blast.
Relationship Status
I come from a pretty big family—I have a whopping twenty-eight siblings that follow along in the Jesuit tradition, including Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio and my many sisters named Loyola.
Religion
Don't be scared off by my pride in my Jesuit heritage. Like any good follower of Ignatius of Loyola, I believe in being open and inclusive. My main values are to study hard and be nice, and those are things that anybody can get on board with regardless of faith.
If you've got a thirst for knowledge and a community service streak a mile wide, we'll get along just fine.
You should apply to me if...
you love serving your community, and that 14:1 student-to-professor ratio.
