Mills College

About Me

Intro

Ladies, if you're looking for a crazy party every night, four hundred-student lectures you might go to every once in a while, frat boys wearing bro tanks, and a campus where you see new faces everywhere you look…then we aren't meant to be. Womp womp.

I'm more the type that likes to binge-watch Netflix on a Friday night and wake up the next morning to write that five-page essay that's due on Monday. Why so early? Well, you can't procrastinate on that paper because you have to be in class the day it's due. There are only nine people in it, and you've already missed your one excused absence due to menstrual cramps.

So I guess I'm a little different. I'm not like the other colleges you may be looking at. I mean, for one thing, I'm a women's college. Sorry, fellas. I'm only interested in the ladies.

When you're on campus, you can focus on what you really came to college for: an education. The women here are really smart. You can get into accelerated Bachelor's/Master's programs for things like mathematics, education, and computer science that let you earn both degrees in about five years. I'm also well-known for my experimental music program.

You'll learn a lot from your professors, but I'm tellin' ya, the ladies here are so socially aware that you'll end up learning a lot from them, too. No matter what you major in, you're guaranteed to minor in gender studies. One way or another.

And hey, if spending your weekend binging on Arrested Development doesn't sound amazing (you're crazy), then you're also a twenty-minute drive to the city social scene.

So come check me out. I'm the real deal.

Hometown

Oakland, CA. If you walk outside the gates, the only thing you'll see is a freeway entrance and a gas station. But I'm located in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. It's easy enough to hop on a bus or a Mills shuttle and go to Downtown Oakland, Berkeley, or San Francisco. Students often call campus a "bubble." Sometimes you want to get out of the bubble, and sometimes you're grateful for the bubble.

Body Type

I'm slim 'n' sassy. There are about 1,000 undergraduate women here and 300 male and female graduate students. Let's just say that if you ding someone's car in the parking lot, there's a good chance you'll have three classes with them.

And my campus size is only 135 acres, so it's not like you can easily avoid those awkward confrontations. On the bright side, you won't have to plan a meeting place with your friends; odds are, you'll bump into them on your way to class.

Current Living Situation

A lot of students actually live on campus all four years here—58%, to be exact. It's more convenient since I'm not located in a typical college town. The campus is fenced off and not super integrated with the community. There are also a lot of commuter students, but for those who do live on campus, it's pretty luxurious.

Let me break it down for you.

The majority of rooms here are singles, but you can also choose to live with a roommate.

There are two first-year dorms: Orchard Meadow and Warren Olney. The rooms in these dorms are huge, and you even get your own sink.

There are also a couple dorms for continuing students, and if you want to be closest to the only cafeteria on campus, I'd suggest living in White Hall even though the rooms are much smaller than the first-year rooms.

I also have family housing, on-campus apartments (you have to be 21 to live there), and co-op housing.

Relationship Status

Since I'm one of the only women's colleges in California, and one of two on the West coast, I would say I'm very, very single.

Politics

My student body is so liberal that the security guard probably wouldn't let you on campus if you tried to enter with a Bush-Cheney bumper sticker on the back of your car. And if you did get through the gate, plan on getting your car keyed.

Everyone is so politically correct and worried about stepping on each other's feminist toes that an econ lecture on supply and demand will often turn into a healthy debate about gender pronouns.

It provides a learning environment that's very unique and focused on equality and sociopolitical rights.

You should apply to me if...

you felt like you were more socially aware than your average classmate in high school and you want a small, non-hectic environment to spend your college years in.
