Speaker: Aladdin and Princess Jasmine
"A whole new world."
Princess Jasmine: A whole new world.
Aladdin: (Don't you dare close your eyes.)
Princess Jasmine: A hundred thousand things to see.
Aladdin: (Hold your breath, it gets better.)
Context
This line was sung by Aladdin and Princess Jasmine (voiced by Brad Kane and Lea Salonga) in the song "A Whole New World", written by Tim Rice and Alan Menken, from the film Aladdin (1992).
In the 1992 Disney classic Aladdin, our titular hero goes from street rat to prince of a fictional country in two shakes of a lamb's tail or, rather, one rub of a Genie's magical lantern. He wants to be Prince Ali of Ababwa (Ali Baba was too obvious) so he can have an opportunity to wine, dine, and hopefully marry Princess Jasmine, whom he has loved from afar.
Their first date involves flying, not in typical hot air balloon/private jet fashion, but on a magic carpet. And while they're soaring on the magic carpet, Aladdin and Jasmine burst into song about breaking social boundaries and finding freedom and love. Aladdin is free from being a poor street kid, and Jasmine is free from the constraints of arranged marriage.
And that is definitely something worth singing about.
Where you've heard it
If you grew up in the 90s, you've probably heard this quote while watching Aladdin on one of those special Disney VHS tapes that looked like big white books. Or, if you're really lucky, you've heard it in a romantic setting.
Additional Notable References:
- Pixar animator Nick Pitera became a YouTube sensation for his special versions of Disney songs where he sang both the male and female parts. His version of "A Whole New World" has over 30 million views. Some people are just too talented.
- 23 years after Aladdin was released, the whole cast reunited and performed the iconic song. And the guy who came up with the song, composer Alan Menken, played piano in the background.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
Maybe save this quote for a quiet, romantic moment and not a big, loud dinner party.
