Speaker: Marnie Michaels
Sometimes being stuck inside my own head is so exhausting it makes me want to cry.
Context
This line was spoken by Marnie Michaels (played by Allison Williams) in the episode "Weirdos Need Girlfriends Too," written by Lena Dunham and Dan Sterling, in the show Girls (2012- ).
In the first season of Girls, Marnie was the character who seemed to have her life together. She wasn't freaking about her last year of college like Shoshanna, getting cut off by her parents like Hannah, or anything that Jessa does. However, her uptight facade breaks in pieces in "Weirdos Need Girlfriends Too" after she sees that her ex-boyfriend Charlie is in Rome with his new girlfriend. Honestly, the block button is there for a reason, folks.
Hannah is too busy rekindling her relationship with Adam, so Marnie ends up unexpectedly confiding in Jessa. They end up going out on the town, going to some rich, lonely guy's apartment, and making out with each other.
Yes, the rich, lonely guy is more than a little creepy, but it's nice to see Marnie get to vent a little bit, be spontaneous, and break out of her mold as the "uptight mom-type" of the Girls cast.
Where you've heard it
You've probably heard this when one of your friends has been too busy studying, working, or just not feeling themselves. We don't recommend what Marnie did in this episode as an antidote though.
Pretentious Factor
If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.
"Vulnerable" is the word you're looking for to describe this quote, not pretentious.
